Dr. Irene Okoronkwo- Obika, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, CCHP-MH is a nationally recognized children's author and dual certified nurse practitioner. Dr. O, as she is affectionately known as, received her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Texas at Arlington(UTA) School of Nursing at Health Innovation. She successfully defended her capstone, " Mental Health Clinicians Attitudes towards the recovery of Severely Mentally Ill inmates." She concurrently received her postmaster’s certification in psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at UTA. Dr. O completed her master's degree in Science with the concentration in Family Nurse Practitioner at Texas Women's University at Dallas, TX. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Lousiana State University of Health Science Center. Dr. O has over a decade of experience in medical and psychiatric nursing. She has a passion for serving vulnerable populations. She is currently practicing at one of the largest jails in the United States treating the most severe cases of depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia. Dr. O has demonstrated her commitment to higher training and education through her additional certification as a Certified Correctional Health Professional in Mental Health(CCHP-MH) which is recognized by the National Commission on Correction Health Care. Dr. O also completed the Vickie Milazzo Institute Legal Nurse Consultant Program in 2017 further her knowledge base of the legal aspects of nursing. She also is experienced in assisting clients who have personality disorders like Borderline, Schizoid, Antisocial, Histrionic, and narcissistic personalities disorders. She also contracts her services to a federal detention center primarily seeing Spanish speaking individuals with anxiety and mood disorders. Dr. O successfully worked in community-based outpatient mental health centers as well as urgent care centers in Dallas, TX. She also has committed herself to mentoring the next generation of nurse practitioners as former clinical faculty at Frontier University and University of Texas at Houston, TX School of Nursing. During her time as a faculty member, she cultivated the skill of lecturing. She has been a paid national presenter on mental illness. She also created a children's company called Chisom The Champ LLC provides edutainment tools to increase the self-esteem of children. Dr. O is also Senior Director of Emmanuel’s Village Builders- a non-profit organization focused on providing academic scholarships for disadvantaged youth. In her spare time, Dr. Obika enjoys family outings with her husband and young son.
